Now that classes have resumed, and football season is upon us, you may notice that the city takes on a different air. It could be the blind hope for cool weather that the fall will bring (don’t count on it), or it could be the buzz around the Longhorns’ new coach. Either way the college revival changes the landscape of Austin in more ways than one.

The first game of the season will be THIS WEEKEND – Saturday Aug 30th @ 7pm – so locals, tourists, and students need to prepare themselves. It’s a huge game against North Texas, and now that UT has a new head coach, things could get spicy. (If you haven’t bought tickets yet, order them ).

Traffic, limited parking, and road closures are common before, during, and after the game. If you have no intentions of seeing a football game this season, hide your face in shame and avoid the area around the stadium (and around campus for that matter) during game time. But, if you’re like most Austinites, you’ll want to be out and about, even if you aren’t going to the game. Finding parking downtown can be a hassle, even on the best of days, so you’re best bet is to cab it to your favorite spot and take advantage of our PediCabs. Usually operated by students and the scores of young professionals in the city, these fast-pedaling cabbies will get you where you need to go in a way that lets you absorb a unique perspective of downtown Austin while people-watching to your heart’s content. If you are driving, have a parking plan in mind before you get on the Drag.

UT is not particularly friendly in the parking department, especially if you are not a student. In their defense, it gets crowded, and they do offer a shuttle service that will pick you up at Barton Creek Mall and drop you directly at the stadium for $9 (children under 12 are free; click to buy tickets). If you’re driving yourself, realize that a lot of the campus lots and street parking need to be emptied days before the start of the game, meaning many public lots or primo free parking areas will most likely be full. There are public lots on Guadalupe, 27th Street, and San Antonio Street specifically for game day, but the cost is a flat $20. Carpooling can cut that price down, and the city bus only costs $2 and will drop you off right at the stadium too.

Of course the city delivers when it comes to watching the games on the screen if you can’t make it to the stadium. The Crown and Anchor Pub, right on campus, always caters to the Longhorns with five big screen TVs and daily beer specials. Their beer is all local – if not Austin, then definitely Texan – hand-crafted brews, and they have Happy Hour ALL DAY on Sunday. They boast a full menu too, and it’s won them plenty of awards, making this pub your one-stop-shop for all your boozin, ballin, and munchie needs.

Crown and Anchor is a great pit stop for the away games too, but Little Woodrow’s on West 6th offers the best away game specials. For every UT game not played in Royal Stadium, Little Woodrow’s offers shots, mugs, and buckets of beer. They start the party early – one hour before kickoff – so you have plenty of time to get in, get a seat, and order before the game begins.

So whether you’re a football fan or not, or whether you prefer watching the games live or in the warm, boozy comfort of your favorite bar, you’ll notice a change sweep over Austin this weekend. It will last well through the football season, so keep parking changes in mind and be sure to ask your favorite bartenders what the Longhorn Special is.
